More than 60 hungry men, women and children stood in line to sample 11 hot soups, chowders and stews during the Snowdown sponsored by the Beech Hill After School program in Otis. Entries were created by the After School students from Ptis and Hancock as well as eight several community cooks. Judges Barbara Davis, librarian; Margo LaPlante, teacher; and Everett Steinberger, dad, chose their favorites. First place was taken by a red, spicy soup swimming with sausage and large cuts of vegetables created by the Hancock After School program, called Soup a la Hancock. Second went to the Flood family with their Meat Stew in a Silver Bowl. Third place was a tie between the Ormsby family’s Polish Stew thick with cabbage, tomato and sausage, and the Montignys’ Ham & Spud, tender hunks of ham and potato. After dinner, young and old joined with caller Chrissy Fowler for a contra dance. Photos by Catherine McKinney.
