Scores of small craft of nearly every type — cat boats, sharpies, Nordic models, traditional Downeast pulling boats and elegant wooden kayaks — filled most of the main exhibition areas at the Maine Boatbuilders Show in Portland last weekend. There were a few larger boats, both power and sail, as well and exhibitors offering every kind of marine-related merchandise and service ranging from exquisite copper and bronze hardware to books, insurance and interior design. On Saturday, with bright sunshine and a temperature of nearly 70 degrees, the crowd was moderate but steady as people balanced the attraction of beautiful weather against the show’s offerings. Sale of three-day tickets — usually purchased by potentially serious buyers — was reported strong, leading one Downeast boatbuilder to say, “We’re seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, but it’s a long tunnel.” Photos by Stephen Rappaport.
