New Quarry Piece Explores Conflicts Among Coastal Inhabitants : STONINGTON — The coast of Maine is a habitat for many creatures — sea, animal and human — and their coexistence is the focus of a new performance at the Settlement Granite Quarry. “Q2: Habitat,” an Opera House Arts production, follows on the success of “Quarryography,” which was performed during the 2006-07 season. The production “depicts the tensions and demands made on beautiful coastal places from Martha’s Vineyard to the Maine coast by the diverse populations which claim these properties as their own,” said Linda Nelson, opera house director. Flat Calm, Flat Fish Hunting the Mighty Halibut : Summer was just a few days away, but at 1:15 in the morning, it was still pitch black on the water once Crossfire left the lights of the Stonington Co-op dock behind heading for a day of halibut fishing. Despite the hour, skipper Rick Trundy was surprisingly jovial. The weather was fine — the night air was mild under a bright moon and the forecast of a light northwest breeze presaged flat seas — and before leaving the dock he was pretty sure he had a market that would pay a good price for any halibut he caught. Ben Layman’s production is stark, sober and spooky. His directing is crisp and swift, which is a blessing in a drama that is heavy on dialogue. His use of background music is especially effective and helps affirm the mood of each scene. But the particular triumph of “Dracula” is the acting.
