When the Saints Come Marching In … to Stonington : Judith Jerome, artistic director at Opera House Arts, leads a Second Line parade through downtown Stonington Sunday. The parade capped the four-day 8th Annual Deer Isle Jazz Festival. The focus of this year’s festival went beyond music from New Orleans to “New Orleans: Culture, Crisis and Community.” Named for the group of dancing spectators who follow the brass band in a traditional New Orleans jazz funeral, Second Line parades are held weekly to celebrate and affirm New Orleans’ heritage. The “first lines” in jazz funerals were the mourners, followed by the band and the “second line.” This year’s festival raised several hundred dollars for Sweet Home New Orleans, a nonprofit charity with a mission to perpetuate New Orleans’ cultural traditions by providing direct services to the individuals and institutions that will carry them forward. — ELLSWORTH AMERICAN PHOTO BY JAMES STRAUB
